Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai visited Maiduguri, Borno State, in July 2023, accompanied by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed and her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai. The visit marked the 10th anniversary of her historic 2013 UN speech, a pivotal moment in her global advocacy for girls' education. The event also coincided with her 26th birthday and aimed to highlight the persistent challenges girls face in accessing education, particularly in regions affected by conflict like North-East Nigeria. Maiduguri was chosen as a significant location because it was the starting point for the Malala Fund's campaign in Nigeria.
During her time in Borno State, Malala held a special "Malala Day" celebration alongside government officials and young activists. The delegation met with Governor Babagana Zulum to discuss strategies for enrolling more girls in school, and the governor pledged to enroll an additional 500,000 girls. Malala also visited local secondary schools and engaged directly with students, activists, and educators supported by the Malala Fund, which has invested over $6.1 million in Nigerian partners since 2014. Her message centered on the resilience of the girls she met and the urgent need for government leaders to prioritize and adequately fund education initiatives
THis photo assignment documented Malala's visit to Maiduguri Nigeria on their 10th year Anniversary, and also visit to schools and projects that have received funding from the organization.
